Gray and White Cats: Two Genes, One Beloved Coat
The gray-and-white cat is the softest version of the tuxedo idea: dove-gray where a tuxedo is black, white bib and paws in the same tailored places. It is one of the most common, most loved looks in the whole cat population.
Two genes build it, and several breeds wear it officially. The questions people bring here (what is it called, what breed is it, is it rare) all have short honest answers. Here they are.

What is a gray and white cat called?
Officially, a blue-and-white bicolor. The fancy's word for gray is blue, and registries grade white-marked cats as bicolors by how much white they carry (the same Van/Harlequin/Bi-Colour scale our tuxedo page quotes from ). Informally, a gray-and-white with the classic chest-and-paws layout gets called a gray tuxedo. All one pattern family: color plus the white-spotting gene.
The recipe is exactly two genes stacked. The dilution gene () turns the cat's black pigment gray. The white-spotting gene () stops pigment cells reaching parts of the coat, painting the white wherever they never arrived. Both are covered in depth on our gray page and our tuxedo page. This coat is simply both stories on one cat.
The short version
A gray and white cat is a blue bicolor: dilute black (gray) plus the white-spotting gene. Not a breed, not rare, not sex-linked: an everyday masterpiece.
Which breeds come in gray and white
Any breed that allows both dilution and bicolor, which is much of the fancy. Blue-and-white British Shorthairs (a classic of the breed). Blue-and-white Maine Coons. Norwegian Forest Cats and Siberians in their forest-coat versions. Munchkins (every color allowed), Devon Rexes in waves, and the American Shorthair. The four all-gray breeds, notably, do NOT come in gray-and-white. The Russian Blue, Chartreux, Korat and British Blue standards are solid-only. That is a genuinely useful identification fact: a gray cat WITH white markings is not any of the four famous blues.
What the coat does and does not predict
The honest section, as always. Sex: both genes are autosomal, so gray-and-white cats split evenly male and female. Rarity: none; this is one of the commonest coats in the general population. Personality: one curiosity worth reporting precisely. In the single owner-survey study on coat color and behavior (Stelow et al. 2016), gray-and-white cats appear in the owner-reported more-assertive group, alongside black-and-white and -family cats. The usual scoping applies (our tortie page reads the study carefully): owner impressions, everyday settings only, never replicated. Lifespan: no study measures it by coat; her breed and care decide.
The gray-and-white is what happens when the two most successful coat genes in the species land on the same cat, and the result is so common we forget to look at it. Look at it: the tailoring is exquisite. Show us yours.

What are gray and white cats called?
Blue bicolors, in registry vocabulary: blue is the fancy's word for gray, and bicolor names the white-marked pattern. Informally: a gray tuxedo, when the white sits on the chest and paws.
What breed is a gray and white cat?
Usually none: the coat is common across the general population and many breeds. Notably, it rules OUT the four famous all-gray breeds (Russian Blue, Chartreux, Korat, British Blue), whose standards are solid-only.
Are gray and white cats rare?
No: dilution and white spotting are two of the most widespread coat genes there are, and their combination is everywhere. Common, and none the less handsome for it.
Are gray and white cats male or female?
Both, evenly: neither gene is sex-linked. Unlike orange cats or calicos, the coat says nothing about the sex.
Are gray and white cats friendly?
As friendly as their upbringing and their breed lines make them: the one owner-survey study on coat and behavior put gray-and-whites in its owner-reported more-assertive group, with heavy caveats (impressions, not observations; never replicated). Individual personality dwarfs coat color.
Can a Russian Blue have white patches?
Not per the standard: solid blue only. A gray cat with a white bib is a beautiful bicolor domestic, not a Russian Blue.
