Adopting from a shelter and buying from a breeder aren't at odds: every cattery in the directory can sponsor a nearby shelter, and we say so on its listing. If you're still torn between the two, start by visiting the shelters in your area.

How do I spot a reputable cat breeder?
A reputable breeder is registered where their state or country requires it, enrolls kittens with a recognized pedigree registry (TICA or CFA in the US, the GCCF in the UK, the CCA-AFC in Canada, ACF or ANCATS in Australia), health-tests the breeding cats and shows you the results without being asked, never lets a kitten go before 12 weeks, and hands you a written contract along with the veterinary records. Listings in this directory display those checks as badges.
Are the catteries in this directory verified?
Yes. Before publication, we look the cattery up on the public registers of its own country: the business or company register, the local breeding license where one is required, and the pedigree registry the breeder names. You can't buy a badge; you earn it by passing the check, and a listing can go live with no badge at all.
How do I get alerted when kittens are available?
Create an alert from your profile: pick a breed, your ZIP or town, and a radius in miles. As soon as a cattery breeding that breed posts kittens available within your radius, you get an email telling you how far away they are.
How much does a kitten from a breeder cost?
It depends on the breed, the bloodline and the market: prices differ a lot between the US, the UK, Canada and Australia, and rare breeds cost more. Our breed profiles give the observed price range for each breed, market by market. Be wary of very low prices: health testing and good breeding conditions cost money.
