Small Cat Breeds: The Ones That Genuinely Stay Small

The [Siamese](/breeds/siamese) family sets the floor: TICA's boxes put females at just 5 to 8 lb (2.3 to 3.6 kg), and our profile leads with the lightest-breed distinction for good reason. Its relative the [Oriental](/breeds/oriental) carries the same fine-boned architecture in every color. The [Devon Rex](/breeds/devon-rex) is the best-MEASURED small cat on this site. Registries converge on 6 to 9 lb, and a measured cohort of 1,545 Devons puts the median at 3.0 kg (6.6 lb): a rare case where the box and the data agree. The [Cornish Rex](/breeds/cornish-rex) keeps the same featherweight, wave-coated build.

Two quieter members: the [Korat](/breeds/korat) is a compact, semi-cobby small cat, and the [Abyssinian](/breeds/abyssinian) a svelte, light-medium athlete that reads smaller than it weighs. And one honesty entry. The [Russian Blue](/breeds/russian-blue) is routinely listed as small-to-medium, but no registry publishes a weight range for it: a scarcity our profile documents as the finding, rather than papering over.

The [Munchkin](/breeds/munchkin) is the breed people picture when they say "small cat", and it is the wrong picture. The Munchkin's gene shortens the LEGS, not the cat. Ask the fancy for THE smallest breed and the usual answer is the Singapura. TICA and GCCF both say it outright: the smallest breed of cat. CFA hedges to 'one of the smallest of all pedigreed cats.' That wording is the registries' own framing, and our Singapura profile reports it as such, with the registry range at roughly 4 to 8 lb (1.8 to 3.6 kg) and females toward the low end.

No published study measures the breed's weight at population level, and the profile says that plainly instead of dressing a claim up as a measurement. Among the numbers that ARE measured, the Siamese female box and the Devon Rex's median remain the smallest verified figures on this site.

A small breed stays LIGHT; it does not stay young. Adult frame arrives on schedule. Energy stays high in the racy breeds (a 7 lb Oriental exercises like a parkour athlete). And the food bowl still needs portioning, because a light frame shows extra weight fastest of all. There is no healthy way to keep a cat kitten-sized: choose a light-framed breed and let it be its adult self.
