The Persian's origin story is usually told with a confidence the documents do not carry, so here is the honest version. The famous account: the Italian traveller Pietro della Valle brought grey longhaired cats from Persia to Europe in the 1620s. The receipts: della Valle's own letter describes the cats, GREY ones, note, not the white angel of the legend, and the connection between those specific cats and today's breed is plausible tradition rather than a documented line. and Wikipedia hedge it; states it flat; we hedge with the hedgers. One genuinely reliable etymology fact survives the fog: Persian-speakers themselves never called the breed "Persian cat", the name is entirely a Western fancy label.
The show-bench century
The checkable history starts where the cat fancy does: Persians headlined the first modern cat shows, and the receipts are plentiful: 's own archive carries an 1899 Westminster photo caption, and America's earliest documented champions (1900-1902) ran to blue and silver Persians (the blue page wears that fashion). The modern flat face arrived mid-century: the face guide carries that fork of the story and its evidence.
Garfield, answered honestly
The biggest search in this file is "garfield cat breed", and the honest answer is: unresolved on purpose. The strip never states a breed; the orange-tabby look says nothing ; and the fan theory that Jim Davis modelled Garfield on a Persian remains exactly that, a theory, whose supporting quote we could not verify at a primary source and therefore do not print. Name a cartoon cat's breed with confidence and you have left the evidence; we stop at the strip's edge.
Blofeld's cat: a genuine two-source dispute
The Bond villain's white lap cat is film history's most famous Persian, except the two specialist sources our research read disagree: one identifies a chinchilla PERSIAN, the other argues TURKISH ANGORA, and no official production source settles it. A disputed icon is a better story than a false certainty, so the dispute is what we publish.
Celebrity Persians: two myths corrected, two real ones
Two corrections the listicles keep missing: Karl Lagerfeld's Choupette is a documented BIRMAN, and Grey's Anatomy's Meredith cat is a Scottish Fold: neither is a Persian despite a thousand captions. The genuinely documented celebrity Persians are better anyway: Raymond Chandler wrote with his black Persian Taki on the desk, and Marilyn Monroe kept a white Persian named Mitsou.
