Say orange in Texas, ginger in Manchester, and a judge at any cat show will write down the same word: red. That is the registry name for this coat in every major standard, and on a Maine Coon it usually arrives as red tabby, because the breed's tabby heritage shows through orange fur more insistently than through any other color. The marmalade giant with the swirled flanks and the white chest is the postcard version of this breed, and the internet has never once objected.

The split is purely geographic; there is no fourth, secret variety. An "orange Maine Coon for sale" in Ohio and a "ginger Maine Coon kitten" in Leeds are the same class of cat. On this page we use all three because our readers do.
Why almost every ginger is a boy
The red coat rides on the X chromosome. A male cat needs just one copy to be fully orange; a female needs the copy on both of her Xs, a rarer draw. When a female inherits only one, the red weaves together with black instead, and you get her tortie or calico sister. So ginger toms vastly outnumber ginger queens, and a female orange Maine Coon is a genuinely uncommon, entirely healthy cat. Uncommon is not a price rule, though: rarity charts are a breeder-marketing habit, not a registry concept, so a "rare female ginger" premium is the seller's choice, not a standard.
Cream: the soft-serve version
Dilution, the same recessive trait that turns black cats blue, softens red to cream: a pale, warm, almost apricot coat that the standards class separately and breeders adore. Two dilute-carrying orange parents can throw cream kittens, and a cream Maine Coon in full winter coat looks like something a pastry chef imagined.

Famous gingers, honestly told
Two reasons your feed is full of orange Maine Coons. Rubble, a ginger-and-white Maine Coon from Exeter in England, was reported by his owner to have reached nearly 32 when he died in 2020; the family never submitted him to Guinness, so the age is a reported one, not a verified record, and we print it exactly that way. Omar, a ginger tabby Maine Coon from Melbourne, went viral in 2017 as one of the world's longest cats, reported by the BBC at around 120 cm (about 47 in) nose to tail; Guinness never verified a record for Omar, so, like Rubble, he stays in the reported column.
