A solid black Maine Coon reads like a small panther with a lumberjack's coat, and yes, they are entirely real and entirely standard: black is one of the breed's classic solid colors in every major registry. What most pages will not tell you is that the standards themselves treat a perfect black as an achievement. Canada's standard objects, in its own words, to a "smokey undercoat or rust tinge" on a black cat: a truly even, root-to-tip black with no brownish cast and no pale undercoat is the hard-won version of this coat, which is exactly why a clean one turns heads at shows.
Is my black Maine Coon actually a black smoke?
The classic mix-up, settled in two moves:
Step 1: part the coat
down to the skin, in good light, on the back or flank
Step 2: read the roots
black all the way down = solid black; a pale, almost white flash at the roots = black smoke, a separate registry class
Kittens make this genuinely tricky: smoke undercoats develop as the adult coat grows in, so a "black" kitten can declare itself smoke months later.
Black and white Maine Coons
Very much a thing, and showable everywhere: black with white belongs to the bicolor family, and the standards even specify the white. requires white on the bib, belly and all four paws for its "& white" classes; the UK and Canada carry near-identical minimum-white rules. The honest version: black is a standard, well-established color, and what is genuinely uncommon is a flawless one, per the standards' own fault language about rust tinges and smoky undercoats. Brown tabby remains the coat people picture; a good black simply photographs like midnight.
