Orange Cat Names, and Why Your Ginger Cat Is Probably a Boy

The gene that makes a cat orange was suspected for about seventy years and only actually found in 2025. Two laboratories, one at Stanford and one at Kyushu University in Japan, published within days of each other in the same journal, and they had landed on the same answer: a deletion of roughly five thousand base pairs affecting a gene called ARHGAP36, sitting on the X chromosome.

Their reported deletion sizes differ by a single base pair, 5,075 against 5,076, and their genomic coordinates differ because they used different reference genomes. Why that explains the boys

Orange sits on the X chromosome, and that one fact does all the work.

A male cat has one X. One copy of the deletion and he is orange.

A female cat has two X chromosomes. She needs the deletion on both to be orange throughout. With one copy she is something else entirely: the two X chromosomes are switched on in different patches of skin as she develops, so she comes out tortoiseshell, or calico if white is in the mix. That is why almost every tortie and calico you meet is female, and it is the same fact told from the other side. You will read that 80% of orange cats are male. We went looking for the sample behind that number and could not find one; it is repeated everywhere and traced nowhere. What is genuinely established is the mechanism above, and that the mechanism guarantees a male majority at any real-world frequency of the gene. Orange, ginger, marmalade or red?

Four words, and they are not interchangeable by market or by context.

So if a breeder tells you a kitten is red, they are not describing a different cat.

About the orange cat personality thing

There is real search demand behind the idea that ginger cats are uniformly friendly and share a single brain cell between them. It deserves an honest answer rather than a wink.

The evidence is thin and it points in more than one direction. One study asked people to rate coat colors by description alone, with no photographs of real cats, and found people rate orange as friendlier. That measures a stereotype, not a cat.

Another study asked 1,274 owners about their own actual cats, and found the opposite signal for the orange-linked females, torties and calicos, which were rated more aggressive rather than less. The authors themselves flagged that the effect might be an artifact of how the scoring worked.

So: the meme is a lovely piece of culture with almost nothing underneath it. Name your cat after it anyway. Just do not expect the cat to have read the same posts.

The names

Ginger, spice and citrus. Ginger, Marmalade, Saffron, Paprika, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Turmeric, Clementine, Mango, Apricot, Tangerine, Peaches, Zest, Amber, Honey, Butterscotch, Caramel, Toffee, Biscuit, Pumpkin.

Fire, sun and sunset. Blaze, Ember, Cinder, Flare, Sunny, Solstice, Dawn, Rusty, Copper, Bronze, Flint, Sparks, Phoenix, Kindle, Aurora.

Redheads from culture, each verified as actually orange or actually red-haired: Garfield (Jim Davis, first published 19 June 1978, and named after Davis's grandfather rather than the president), Jonesy (the ship's cat in Alien, 1979), Crookshanks (Hermione's cat, though he is half-Kneazle and therefore only mostly a cat), Puss (of the Boots, in the DreamWorks films), Orangey (a real working film cat who won two PATSY awards, the animal Oscar, and played the cat in Breakfast at Tiffany's), Milo (of The Adventures of Milo and Otis).

Names that mean orange or red elsewhere. Rojo (Spanish, red), Rosso (Italian, red), Rouge (French, red), Naranja (Spanish, orange), Aka (Japanese, red), Kızıl (Turkish, crimson), Rua (Irish, red-haired), Flann (Old Irish, blood-red), Sorrel (English, a reddish-brown horse coat).

Classic and human. Rufus (Latin, literally red-haired), Ginger Rogers if you have two cats, Archie, Clifford, Basil, Tigger, Jasper, Winston, Hobbes, Simba, Cheddar, Cheeto, Nacho.

Which breeds come in red

If you want a specific breed rather than the cat that turns up: the Maine Coon, Persian, British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Turkish Van, Abyssinian, Devon Rex, Scottish Fold, Munchkin and Siberian all recognize red or cream in their standards. The Turkish Van in particular is famous for it.

Most orange cats are none of those, of course. Orange is a color, not a breed.

What to take away

• The orange gene was found in 2025: a deletion affecting ARHGAP36 on the X chromosome, identified by two independent teams (Stanford and Kyushu) within days of each other.
• Most orange cats are male because the gene rides the X chromosome: one copy makes a male orange, a female needs two; the "80% male" figure quoted everywhere traces to no actual sample.
