Selkirk Rex for Sale: Prices, Breeders, and the Genotype Ladder

The Selkirk market's most interesting document is a price list that charges by GENE. One US cattery prices kittens by their curl genotype, the cleanest illustration anywhere that this breed's dominant curl is real market information. Around it: named catteries in three countries, a British club that states its no-price policy in its own words, and an Australian market we could not price at all. Everything below is named and dated.

United States: three price shapes, one genotype ladder

Six named catteries answered the question three different ways. The flat-and-tiered shape: Texas Country Cats at $600 to $1,000 by tier, Adams Curly Rexes at a flat $950. Then the genotype ladder, unique in our files. Alynn Cattery prices straight-coated kittens at $1,500-2,500, curl-carrying (heterozygous or homozygous) kittens at $2,500+, and breeding cats at $4,500+. It is the only US source pricing by DNA rather than color, which the breed's dominant-curl genetics make perfectly rational (the genetics page explains why a heterozygous cat is the breeding favorite). United Kingdom: the club says it plainly

The live Pets4Homes sample (all six listings read): £455 to £1,200, clustering £600-800, against the platform's own evergreen £800-1,500 claim that only one live listing actually reached. The named cattery: Boucles (GCCF and TICA registered) at £1,250 for pet or show-neuter homes (£300 deposit, £950 on collection), breeding homes from £2,000. And a first in our files: the UK's own Selkirk Rex club STATES its no-price policy in its own words ("We do not give a guideline on any prices for kittens as breeders prices vary"). Every other breed's club policy we have met had to be inferred from absence.

Canada: two Quebec catteries, a real 35% spread

Mon Chat Mouton: base CA$3,000 tax-inclusive, CA$500 deposit, a priority list capped at 15 families and roughly a six-month wait; breeding rights CA$6,000-8,000. Chatterie Du Berger (Saint-Léonard-d'Aston): CA$2,200 companion-quality, uniform across all three coat types, CA$250 deposit, kittens homed at 14-15 weeks. The live Kijiji sample (all 13 results read): six priced Selkirk listings from CA$600 to CA$2,350, clustering CA$800-2,000, in both languages.

Australia: blocked and empty, stated plainly

No Australian price was found anywhere. Three named breeders surfaced via a directory with no published figures. A general pass returned zero listings, and both live AU marketplaces were bot-walled on every door we tried, the same wall our Cornish Rex research met on the same market. We publish the absence rather than a guess; Australian buyers work breeder networks directly.

What the genotype ladder teaches every buyer

Alynn's price list is the breed's genetics as economics. The curl is dominant. A heterozygous (one-copy) cat is the breeding program's favorite per GCCF's own policy, and straight-coated Selkirks are genuine, registrable members of the breed at the ladder's lower rungs. Ask any breeder which genotype a kitten is; the honest ones price like Alynn thinks.
