Tonkinese vs Siamese vs Burmese: The Honest Triangle

Start with the answer to the question most people actually typed: yes, the Tonkinese began as a deliberate Siamese x Burmese cross, and no, that does not make it "just a mix": it is a formally recognized breed with its own standards at every major registry, and what separates a pedigreed Tonkinese from a cat that merely looks like one is documentation, never coat. Now the triangle, compared honestly, including the one claim every registry makes that their own numbers contradict.

One founding cat, three breeds

The tangle at the origin is real and delicious: Wong Mau, the small walnut-brown cat brought to San Francisco in 1930 and long credited as the founding Burmese, is now described by CFA, TICA and GCCF alike as, in modern genetic terms, the first TONKINESE: a natural cb/cs mink. The mother of one breed was retroactively a member of another, which is why the Siamese-Burmese-Tonkinese triangle confuses everyone and why the "mix" question never dies.

The in-between claim, checked against the registries' own numbers

Every registry describes the Tonkinese as the perfect midpoint between its parents. Their own weight charts disagree: TICA's Tonkinese figures (males 8-12 lb, females 6-8 lb) sit LEVEL with TICA's own Siamese figures, not midway to the heavier Burmese; and GCCF's box (6-12 lb, unsexed) makes the Tonkinese the LIGHTEST of its own three, not the middle. The in-between language is true of the coat (the mink pattern genuinely sits between pointed and sepia) and of the build's look; the scales never signed the brochure, and we print the gap because no competitor page checks it.

Voice, measured where possible

On vocalization, TICA's own page does something rare: it ranks its own breeds, stating directly that the Tonkinese is LESS vocal than the Siamese. The honest caveat follows: no measured study scores the Tonkinese's voice (or its boldness, or its sociability), even though both parent breeds ARE measured in the big Finnish datasets, an absence we state rather than paper over by averaging the parents. CFA's framing agrees with TICA's direction: conversational, not operatic.

The one three-way measurement that exists

A 2024 study of more than 8,000 cats (Delgado et al.) measured all three breeds in one dataset and found all three significantly more likely to FETCH than expected, a shared trait the researchers tie to common Far East founder ancestry. It is the strongest genuinely three-way finding in this whole comparison, it matches three registries' own marketing copy word for word, and it means whichever corner of the triangle you choose, buy a supply of throwable mice.

Choosing your corner

The Siamese: the loudest voice, the lightest frame, the founding pointed chart, and the deepest measured file. The Burmese: the heaviest build of the three, the top-of-table measured lifespan, the sepia glow. The Tonkinese: the aqua-eyed mink signature, the volume dial one notch down by its registry's own account, and a color system whose genetics are the cleanest teaching story in the fancy. All three fetch; none of them tolerates an empty house.
