Manx Syndrome explained precisely: the gene that is uniformly lethal in double dose, the severity gradient by tail class, four disagreeing prevalence figures, and the breeder questions.

The Manx's missing tail comes from a dominant mutation in the T gene (Brachyury), and the mechanism deserves to be said precisely, because most pages blur it. A kitten with ONE copy of the mutation is a Manx: short-tailed or tailless, and compatible with a full, normal life. TWO copies do not happen: no cat has ever been found carrying two mutant copies and surviving to term, a finding cross-confirmed by three independent sources spanning thirty-three years (Deforest and Basrur 1979, Adalsteinsson 1980, Buckingham et al. 2013). "Manx Syndrome" is what can happen when the single-copy mutation's effect on spinal development runs further than the tail. Nothing on this page diagnoses any cat; something wrong with your kitten means call your vet, out of hours an emergency clinic.
The mechanism in three sentences
One copy of the mutation makes a Manx and is compatible with a full, normal life. Two copies do not happen: no cat has ever been found homozygous and born alive, across three independent sources and thirty-three years. The syndrome is what can follow when the single copy's effect runs beyond the tail, and it is a spectrum, not a verdict.
What the syndrome actually is
In affected cats, the same developmental shortening that removes the tail can involve the lower spine: spina bifida in several forms, sacral underdevelopment, and downstream problems with bowel and bladder control, including megacolon, documented across four independent clinical papers from 1972 to 2009. Severity concentrates in the most tailless cats: the classic (small) series found 9 of 10 rumpies abnormal while the stumpies fared better, and the modern genetics paper's own estimate puts most affected cats in the rumpy phenotype. One wording note we keep visible: 's own 2011 policy objects to treating "Manx Syndrome" as a single fixed diagnosis, and the objection is fair: it is a spectrum, from none to severe.

Four published numbers exist, they disagree, and we publish all four with their sources rather than averaging them into false precision: 16% (7 of 44 kittens, all rumpies, Deforest and Basrur 1979, via a citing source); approximately 20% overall with about 90% of affected cats being rumpies (Buckingham et al. 2013); about 30% for megacolon specifically ('s current breed page, uncited); and GCCF's own 2011 policy's "around 26%... falling to around 8%... 14% for UK-born cats," attributed there to Robinson 1993, whose reachable abstract states a heritability figure rather than a prevalence. Anyone quoting you ONE settled Manx Syndrome rate is doing arithmetic the sources do not support.
What responsible breeding looks like
All three major registries (, , ) recommend including TAILED Manx in breeding programs, and GCCF's 2011 policy explains the mechanics: because two mutant copies are lost in utero, a rumpy-to-rumpy mating yields roughly two tailless kittens for every tailed one among live births, with the missing quarter never born (GCCF's own document says "usually lethal in utero"; the literature's stronger reading is uniformly, and we show both wordings rather than silently picking).
One checked absence that matters to buyers: NO Manx-specific DNA test exists at UC Davis's veterinary genetics laboratory, whatever a consumer page may imply, so the buyer's protection is the breeding program, not a swab: ask the breeder how tailed cats figure in their program, what neurological and mobility checks their kittens get before homing, and at what age they release kittens (later is better for spotting problems).
What an owner watches, and when to call
For a Manx kitten or cat at home, the signals worth a vet conversation are practical: straining or accidents developing where there were none, reduced sensation around the rear, a change in gait or jumping, persistent constipation. A lifelong tailless rump with none of these is a phenotype, not a disease: "tailless" is not a synonym for "sick," and most Manx live ordinary cat lives. Diet and fiber management for megacolon-spectrum cats exists as a veterinary-managed field, and it belongs to your vet: this page deliberately names no doses and no home protocols.
The law, briefly: an open question we frame carefully
One legal thread belongs here, stated with exactly the care it needs. The Dutch regulator's published test for breeding restrictions has two limbs: one names harmful external characteristics (short legs, folded ears, hairlessness, short muzzles) and does not mention tails; a separate limb on serious hereditary defects names spinal column abnormalities as a worked example, a category Manx Syndrome fits by definition. No Dutch government or advocacy source we read draws that connection for the Manx explicitly. So we publish it as what it is: OUR reading of a published test against a clinical fact, an open question, and not a stated position of any government. Breeders selling into the Netherlands should read the instrument themselves.
