The short answer comes from the breed's own registries, and it is unanimous. and state, in near-identical wording that reads as one voice echoing the other, that the Devon Rex is not hypoallergenic. reaches the same conclusion in its own separate words: "While all cats shed, Devons certainly shed less than most; they are easy-care, wash-and-wear cats that may be well tolerated by those sensitive to cats. Where the myth comes from, honestly
The low-shedding coat is real. The KRT71 mutation behind the breed's wave produces a short, fine coat that drops less hair than most breeds, and 's own wording confirms it. Less hair around the house plausibly means fewer allergen-carrying carriers in circulation for SOME sensitive people, which is exactly what CFA's careful "may be well tolerated" allows. What nobody has measured
No study anywhere in the literature we searched measures the Devon Rex's allergen production against other breeds. No figure exists for this breed, in either direction. Every "produces less allergen" claim you read about the Devon Rex is an inference from the coat, not a measurement. We publish the absence rather than an invented number.
The registries' own test beats any promise
and close with practical advice we cannot improve on. Spend time in the company of a Devon before acquiring one. Wait at least 24 hours to see whether a reaction develops, and ideally visit more than once. Allergic reactions are individual on both sides, cat and human. If allergy is the deciding factor in your household, that visit, repeated, is the only answer with your name on it. A significant household allergy or asthma is also a conversation for your doctor, not a decision a cat website settles.
