American Curl Price: Two Real Rate Cards, and the Traps in Three Markets

The American Curl's price file has something rare in our research: a cattery that prices straight-eared kittens exactly the same as curl-eared ones. That is the opposite of the Scottish Fold market's ear premium, and a small fact that says a lot about this breed's genetics. Around it: two published US rate cards, a UK market of four listings we read one by one, and a Canadian marketplace where most "American Curl" results are not purebred Curls. Everything below is named and dated.

United States: the two rate cards, and one flat-pricing finding

The published figures: Purricurls (New Jersey) states $1,800 pet quality and $2,000-and-up show quality. Luxury Only Kittens (North Bethesda, MD, TICA-registered) states $1,200 to $2,500 for its longhairs. California's Curl Essence, the breed's most-surfaced cattery, publishes no flat price (a $600 deposit, email for the rest) but quotes the wider market at $1,000-3,000, a breeder's own market commentary we label as such.

And the finding worth a paragraph: Curl Essence prices its straight-eared pet kittens THE SAME as curled ones, and no US source anywhere implies an ear-type premium. That is the exact opposite of the Scottish Fold market. When the trait is a harmless pinna curve rather than a cartilage condition, nobody prices around it.

A national marketplace shows the other end: $25 to $750 across ten sampled ads, including five identical $25 "Household Pet" listings from one Maryland town that we decline to treat as breeder pricing. Adoption is its own channel, not a breed price: $50-150 through shelters, with real Curl listings live in California when we checked.

United Kingdom: four listings, read individually

The whole live UK market at our check was four listings, so we read them all. A £100 individual rehoming. A £1,200 titled-parents litter from a TICA/FIFe breeder. A £995 litter from the SAME breeder three weeks later (a within-breeder spread, not corroboration). And a £400 listing whose own text says "Mom is American curly ears, dad is..." a cross, excluded from any purebred range. A second marketplace showed zero listings. The honest UK summary: purebred litters cluster around £995-1,200 from the one visible breeder, the market is genuinely thin, and the platform's own FAQ price line is a currency conversion we refuse to publish as UK data.

Canada: the cross trap, stated as protection

Most "American Curl" results on Canada's largest marketplace are not purebred Curls. Of five live Kijiji listings, four were multi-breed crosses and only one read as plausibly purebred, including one kitten listed under an American Curl search whose own ad stated "Ears: Straight". No Canadian cattery we reached publishes a price (the one named Quebec cattery, Curlfolie, directs to contact). This is not alarm about the breed. It is the single most likely Canadian buying mistake, and reading the ad text past the headline prevents it.

Australia: an empty directory, one labeled guide figure

Australia's biggest breed directory lists zero American Curl breeders at all, and no breeder anywhere in the market publishes a price. The one AUD figure in circulation comes from a secondary guide, and it stays labeled exactly that: a guide's estimate, never a breeder-confirmed range. An Australian buyer is realistically importing, with the registry paperwork conversation that entails.
