The American Bobtail's market has a split no average survives. On the same day our research read the US sources, a marketplace was listing pet-quality cats for $100 to $250, while named, -registered catteries asked $800 to $3,000 for health-tested kittens. Those are two different products wearing one breed name, and this page prices them separately, market by market. United States: a real spread, never one number
The floor is a marketplace. GoKitty's ten live nationwide listings ran $100 to $850, from two $250 adults in Maryland to a five-kitten Pennsylvania cluster at $100 to $150 each, several marked "show quality" by their own sellers. The ceiling is the named-cattery tier. One catalog cattery at $1,000 to $2,000 (health-tested, vaccinated, registered).
One small cattery with three named kittens at $1,800 to $2,000. And the single most detailed pricing found anywhere: the Friemoth Family/NuDawnz operation's own published tiers, Shorthairs $800 to $2,000, Longhairs $1,500 to $3,000, occasional retired adults $300 to $1,000. That longhair premium is one cattery's pricing, not a market rule. No other US source splits its prices by coat length at all.
United Kingdom: one editorial range, zero live listings
The UK is a single-source market. UKPets' breed page states "a well-bred American Bobtail kitten will cost anywhere between £800 and £1,500", and that editorial sentence is the only genuine GBP figure our research found. The live market behind it was empty at our check. Pets4Homes returned "0 American Bobtail Kittens for sale" in its own words, and the one listing UKPets itself filed under the breed was titled "Ragdoll cross kitten for sale" by its own seller. Britain has a price sentence, not a market.
Canada: one dated listing and a registry with an empty directory
Canada is a single-source market too: one live Kijiji listing carried a real, dated price, an "AMERICAN BOBTAIL SHOW KITTEN - REGISTERED" in Vancouver at CA$2,500. The context makes the scarcity structural. maintains a full 29-page judging standard for this breed and, at our check, listed zero current breeder advertisers for it, a cleaner absence than this project found for far rarer breeds.
Australia: blocked, which is not the same as empty
Australia's figure is the one we refuse to print. Every live marketplace our research attempted returned a bot wall, so the market is confirmed-BLOCKED, not confirmed-empty, and the difference matters. Neither national registry body lists the breed ( nowhere in its breed list, with no breed code at all). A compiled "average AUD" figure circulating in search snippets came from no fetchable page, so it stays out. If you are buying in Australia, you are almost certainly importing, and the exporter's market sets the price.
How to buy without falling for the category tag
Three traps our own reading hit, live. A UK marketplace's American Bobtail category contained a Ragdoll cross, by the listing's own title. So the breed tag on a marketplace is a filing choice, not a fact, and the listing text is what to read. A UK-domain retailer priced the breed in euros, not pounds: check the currency symbol before comparing. And the US breeder map is thin by geography, not by count. A census of named catteries found them spread across eleven states, so expect distance, waitlists or both, and treat a local, instantly available "American Bobtail" with the tag-reading caution above.
Adoption: the other door
The breed-rescue route barely exists as a priced market, but general adoption fees frame it. US shelters commonly charge $50 to $175 for a cat. Cats Protection in the UK states £80 to £120 for an adult and £100 to £120 for a kitten. Toronto Humane Society charges CA$225 for a cat and CA$300 for a kitten. A shelter cat with a natural bobbed tail is not an American Bobtail by . But if the look is what you love, it is the cheapest honest version of it.
