Cat Not Eating? This Is a Shorter Clock Than You Think

If a dog skips a meal, you watch and wait.

If a cat stops eating, you are on a clock, and it is measured in hours rather than days. That is not a scare line, it is anatomy, and it is the single most important thing on this page. Appetite is usually the first dial that moves when a cat is unwell, whatever the illness, which is why our sick cat symptoms guide starts exactly here.

Why cats are different, and it is the liver

When calories stop arriving, the body pulls fat out of storage to burn instead. In a cat, that fat can be mobilised faster than the liver can process it, and it accumulates inside the liver cells themselves, crowding out the machinery and impairing how the organ works.

The condition is called hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease. Merck's professional manual is blunt about what happens once it is established: it either resolves within 14 to 21 days, or the animal dies. There is no chronic version to live with.

An overweight cat is at greater risk, not less, because there is more fat to mobilise.

The thresholds

Those first two come from Cornell's own client-facing guidance. The third is International Cat Care, answering a slightly different question, about appetite dropping rather than stopping. Both are right, and the practical rule is the tighter one.

Anything that worries you about your cat is a reason to call your vet, and out of hours, an emergency clinic. Nothing on this page is ever a reason to wait.

Will not eat, or cannot eat?

This is the question that changes what the vet looks for, and an owner can often answer it just by watching.

A cat that cannot eat usually still wants to. It approaches the bowl, shows interest, maybe takes a mouthful and drops it, or turns its head away mid-bite.

Causes in that group:

• Dental pain. Tooth resorption is genuinely common in cats, with prevalence estimates running from 20 to 60%. It is painful and it is invisible without a look inside the mouth.

• Nausea, which looks like refusal but is not.
• Something in the mouth or throat, from a foreign body to a mass.

A cat that will not eat has lost the appetite itself: kidney disease, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal disease, cancer, or pain from anywhere in the body.

One useful contrast

Hyperthyroidism usually does the opposite. A hyperthyroid cat is classically losing weight while eating well, sometimes eating ravenously.

So weight loss with a good appetite and weight loss with no appetite point in different directions, and telling your vet which one you are seeing is genuinely useful information.

And the environmental causes, kept separate on purpose

These are real, and they are not the same category as the ones above:

• A diet change made too fast.
• Food at the wrong temperature. Cold from the fridge smells of very little.
• A dirty bowl, or a bowl next to the litter tray, or a bowl in a corridor where the cat gets ambushed.
• Stress: a move, a new person, a new cat, building work.
• A bowl the cat dislikes. Some cats do prefer a wide shallow dish, which is a measured preference, though the whisker fatigue story sold alongside those bowls does not hold up (we looked into it).

Do not spend three days working through this list. The clock above runs regardless of which category you think you are in.

What you can reasonably try, and for how long

Within the first day, while you are arranging a vet appointment rather than instead of one:

• Warm the food gently to just under body temperature. It transforms the smell.
• Offer something strongly smelling the cat likes.
• Move the bowl away from the litter tray, away from a busy corridor, into a quiet corner.
• Wash the bowl, and try a wide shallow one.

⚠️ What never to do

• Never force-feed. It risks aspiration, and it reliably teaches a cat to associate that food, and often that room and that person, with something unpleasant. Food aversion in a sick cat is a real setback.
• Never give a human medicine. Paracetamol, also sold as acetaminophen, is dangerous to cats at doses as low as 10 mg per kg, because cats lack the enzyme capacity to process it. Human anti-inflammatories are also dangerous. There is no safe home dose of either.
• Never crush a prescribed pill without asking, and never assume every medicine can go in food.

Appetite stimulants for cats do exist, and they are prescription veterinary medicines. That is a conversation with your vet, not a shopping list.

What to take away

• 24 hours for an adult cat, 12 for a young kitten. Then call.
• The reason is hepatic lipidosis, and once established it resolves in two to three weeks or the cat does not survive it.
• An overweight cat is at higher risk, not lower.
• Work out whether the cat cannot eat or will not. A blocked nose and a sore tooth are common and easy to miss.
• Hyperthyroidism usually produces the opposite picture: weight loss with a good appetite.
• Warm the food and move the bowl while you wait, not instead of waiting.
• Never force-feed, and never give paracetamol.
