If you feed raw, go and look in the freezer. On Friday the FDA published a voluntary recall from Northwest Naturals, of Portland, Oregon, covering 53 cases of its Frozen Chicken Recipe for cats over possible salmonella and listeria. That is 1,272 pounds, and it went to shops across the United States.

Everything you need is printed on the bag. The two-pound Frozen Chicken Recipe, lot B-5, best by 01/26/2028, barcode 087316384956. If those match, stop feeding it and take the rest back to the shop for a refund. Nothing else in the range is affected, and the second product in the same recall is a dog food, so a Northwest Naturals bag on your shelf is not automatically a problem.

A recall on chicken. My favourite food. This is a personal attack.

Priya · Health desk

It is one lot out of a whole range.

It is still the principle.

No illnesses have been reported. The reason a recall goes out anyway is that the two bacteria involved reach people as easily as cats, through the bowl, the worktop and the hands that carried the bag. Wash whatever the food touched, and wash your hands after.

And if your cat ate it and then turned lethargic, or has diarrhoea, fever or vomiting, that is a call to your vet rather than a wait-and-see. The bag takes ten seconds to check, which is the shortest job on your list today.
