Owners Dreaded Bringing Their Cat Indoors. Two Thirds Said It Was Easier Than They Feared.

The fear is always the same. The cat has had a garden for years, something changes, a road or a move or a diagnosis, and the owner faces the prospect of shutting the door for good and imagines weeks of yowling at three in the morning.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide asked eighty-seven owners in Australia and New Zealand who had actually done it. More than two thirds said the transition was easier than they had expected. About half the cats had settled in within weeks. "Many people worry that keeping a cat indoors will be stressful for their cat," said Julia Henning, who led the work, "but our findings suggest that the transition was often easier than expected."

I bet it was a door thing.

The detail that stands out is the lack of preparation. Around half the owners made none at all, and more than a third had little or no warning that it was going to happen. Younger cats adapted faster, which will surprise nobody. What the survey cannot tell you is how the ones who found it hard got on, because people who had a miserable time are less likely to fill in a survey about it.

So take it for what it is: not a promise, but a reason to stop dreading it. If it is coming, buy the vertical space and the window seat before the door closes rather than after, and let the cat be bored with you nearby rather than bored alone.
