The mechanism, first
Cat allergy is driven by , a protein made in a cat's skin and salivary glands and spread onto the coat by grooming. It is not the hair: hair is just the delivery vehicle. That single fact retires most breed-level allergy folklore on its own. Coat length, coat texture and shedding level are not the variable that decides how much allergen a cat produces. The Abyssinian's short, ticked, low-maintenance coat is a genuine grooming convenience. Mechanically, it is no reason to expect less Fel d 1.
What exists on this breed specifically: nothing
We ran the search rather than assuming: a PubMed query pairing "" with "Abyssinian" returns zero results. No study has ever measured this breed's allergen production, in either direction. Our own grooming research found the same absence from another angle: no source ties the ticked coat to reduced allergen load. So any page telling you the Abyssinian is hypoallergenic, or that it is especially BAD for allergies, is working from nothing.
What exists on breeds in general: a consensus
A 2021 veterinary consensus review says it flatly: there is no scientific data substantiating any breed's claim to produce less . Every cat makes the protein. Measured differences between INDIVIDUAL cats are real and can be large, but they do not sort by breed. (One strand of industry-funded research, from a pet-food maker's own team, works on reducing active Fel d 1 through diet: a general-cat approach, not a breed fact.)
