Why, and which parts
The latex just under the skin of the leaf, rather than the clear gel inside it.
Toxic principle: Anthraquinones, anthracene, glycosides (aloin)
The active compounds sit in the yellow latex just under the skin of the leaf, not in the clear gel at its center. They are anthraquinones, and they work as a laxative by drawing water into the gut. One of them, aloin, is a pigment, and it is what turns the urine red. That color is the reason many owners call, and it is worth knowing in advance that it is dye rather than blood.
How to recognize it
A rosette of thick, fleshy, tapering leaves with soft pale teeth along the edges, often flecked with white when young. Cut a leaf and it weeps clear gel from the middle and yellow sap from the rim.
Sold as: Medicine plant, Barbados aloe. A label on a pot is a trade name, not a botanical one, and the two often disagree.

Why it matters: Haworthia is not on the ASPCA's toxic list. The two are easy to mix up on a windowsill, and here the mistake runs in the reassuring direction only if you get it the right way round.
